 | Ducati World Brand: Acclaim Part Number: Unknown If you're a fan of motorcycle racing games, then you might want to book some private time with your trusty game console. Acclaim's motorcycle racer has plenty of good ideas going for it, but substandard follow-through and too-easy races keep it trapped in the middle of the pack. p In addition to the standard IGran Turismo/I-esque races, licensing tests, and upgrades, IDucati World/I offers a number of innovative gameplay options. For example, the game's challenge mode allows players to choose their bikes and put money on the line in a head-to-head race. It might be gambling, but at least it's cheaper than racing for real pink slips. p While the game has plenty of bikes to choose from, including several from years gone by, the racing is at times so easy that most seasoned gamers will soon start looking around the room for other discs to spin. A collection of gameplay modes will keep the attention of hard-core bike enthusiasts, but this game will seem to others as rushed as an impromptu game of chicken. IDucati World/I's graphics are dated, and its music is simply terrible. | Ehrgeiz Brand: Ehrgeiz Editorial Review
With a fighting mode, four mini-games, and a stand-alone role-playing game (RPG), Ehrgeiz is essentially six games for the price of one. First, duke it out as one of 10 playable characters (3 of which are from the popular RPG Final Fantasy VII) in hand-to-hand and weapons-based combat. There are 11 different fighting environments to tackle, including a moving train and a hovering airship. Ehrgeiz scores points for diversity. The arsenal of warriors is comprised of various ages, nationalities, and sexes--all of whom are eager to win the ultimate fighting championship. The prize is a mysterious weapon (the strangely dubbed Ehrgeiz). There are a gazillion moves to memorize, and the fluid movement and fantastic secret weapons provide great eye candy.
In addition to fighting, players will also encounter mini-games, such as the foot race "Battle Beach" and strategy game "Battle Panel" (think Othello). This game also contains several elements that will be instantly familiar to RPG fans. Ehrgeiz may not satisfy gamers who want a dedicated RPG or fighting game, but it does offer a diverse range of gameplay for the casual gamer with a limited attention span | *$39.99 |
 | Einhander Brand: sony plastation There's no denying that the space shooter isn't what it used to be. The once-thriving genre, championed by such classics as Gradius and Raiden, has boiled down to more of a nostalgic pastime. People just aren't as jazzed about blowing away hordes of alien space ships and racking up billions of points like before. While the occasional shooter still shows up every now and then, it seems like it'd take a miracle for a company to produce one that would rejuvenate the genre and renew public interest. Leave it to Squaresoft to accept the challenge. And while the fruit of its efforts may not be the miracle this genre needs for a complete revival, it's just about as good as shooters get.
Einhander isn't particularly long, but shooters almost never are. The half dozen or so stages are seamlessly interconnected and demand just over an hour to plow through in total. Each stage - in fact, each part of each stage - grows progressively more difficult, such that you'll constantly face new challenges in the form of smarter, meaner enemies and more of them. Likewise, the mid and end-level bosses will constantly keep you guessing, as they tend to be both unpredictable and versatile in their attack styles. Even shooter veterans will have their hands full with Einhander, though multiple difficulty settings make the game accessible and enjoyable even for those whose hand-eye coordination isn't what it used to be. | *$249.95 |
 | Electronic Arts: Sports Memory Card Brand: Electronic Arts | *$30.94 |
 | Elemental Gearbolt Brand: Elemental Gearbolt Elemental Gearbolt is, if anything, unique. It's a first-person-perspective rail-based game that combines gameplay of two genres: traditional gun games and shooters. As in Time Crisis and Virtua Cop, EG's gameplay occasionally pauses in spots to let you pick off enemies at your will. But overall, the pace is more like Panzer Dragoon (whose graphics and sci-fi/fantasy theme it generally mirrors), which keeps you consistently moving along.
The Elemental Gearbolt premise, explained and furthered by extended animated sequences, puts you - either by yourself or with a gun-toting friend - up to the task of trying to vanquish an empire that has overtaken the land. The goals within its six stages of play are simple: Wipe out the troops and sub-bosses, shoot fairies free from the jeweled magical prisons that envelop them, and take on the main bad guy himself.
The mechanics of having to collect more ammo and reload are withdrawn, as your gun is apparently magic-based. Three elemental weapon options are available, which vary in degrees of damage, speed of fire, and blast radius. The fire elemental setting provides a slow but very powerful shot that can destroy most enemies in a single attempt; the water elemental expels three weak but fast shots; and the lightning elemental works like a shotgun, slowly scattering a hoard of wide medium-powered blasts. The fire elemental is primarily used within the beginning areas of each stage for wiping out the onrushing swarming masses. The water or lightning elemental can provide quick shots for destroying fire from the sub-bosses and boss, while a companion, if present, bombards them straightaway with the fire elemental setting. | *$122.90 |
